Can I say that it was extremely hard trying to tell my niece exactly the reasoning behind me cutting off my hair? I told her it was because I wanted to return to my curly hair. She asked me why did I have to cut off my hair to do that. And guys I didn't know how to explain to her...I just...how much should I tell her?

I'm trying to be but I don't know how much her parents have told her and how much she knows about racism. I don't want to overstep my bounds because she's not my child you know?

I cut it because of how much importance is placed on my hair. My mother hid the scissors from me so I wouldn't cut my hair. It's like it's just hair, but it isn't just hair. I don't know exactly how to explain it properly. But I was tired of letting my hair control me I guess you could say.

i have a friend who shaved her head and brows for that very reason! i have short hair by choice, i think its much stylish, screw society..And ask your niece's mom or dad if you can tell her?

I think I'll do that. But maybe that's something they feel more comfortable with explaining.

I don't think she will. She didn't exactly like it and Zari is...on the independent side like her aunt haha. But it's a possibility.

Just say you wouldn't all brand new hair for a fresh start . . . ? Otherwise I'm unsure how to approach the subject. You could say something like how some people that curly hair is ugly, and you want to change that. You want to show people it can be pretty.

Well I said something along those lines but it was really awkward to deal with.
