So I want to talk about the show Girls. Before I watched it, I read about it. Mostly on ONTD. I heard from its naysayers, but still I thought it would be interesting to watch. So I started watching it on the HBO GO site and I finished watching over the course of week.

The show is...very problematic. I didn't really notice it as much in the first season, though there were things I thought about.

So I just finished watching episode 2 and Hannah breaks with the Republican dude that also happens to be black. Like I don't know how to feel about this. The show is very white washed and I feel like she only brought on Donald Glover to silence her critics. But he basically didn't add anything to the show. Like what the fuck? And then I get to the end of the episode with Adam. She freaks and calls 911 before hanging up. The police show up and she tells them she didn't really mean it, but Adam sort of freaks. They arrest him because of previous citations.

Like I get having different political ideologies and I am no stranger to that. But Adam is basically stalking her and she actually calls the police? There's something wrong with this picture to me, like whoa.

I read another hundred pages of Mine Till Midnight and I wrote about 600 words. I've met my min. goal in the spreadsheet but like I said on Twitter, I wanted to be at about 20,000 words by today, but haven't been writing 1,000 each day, so yeah.

I watch girls, I like it. I don't get why people had a problem with it being not very diverse. There are shows with all african american casts. People acted like it was insane that she didn't have any people of color friends...it's not a very big group of people. I do feel like she caved to pressure and added that character so people would shut up and I wished she hadn't done that.

I get not being with someone because you don't share the same views. My best friend and her husband don't share the same views on religion and politics and they get in to a lot of fights about it.

She felt unsafe and freaked out.

I'm not saying that Hannah is a very likeable character but I really enjoy the show anyways.

It's because of where it's set. The neighborhood has a lot of POC in it. But yeah maybe Lena doesn't have many non white friends.

I like Hannah, though she does a few things that make me side eye her, but I like her.

There are POC IN the show, just not in their immediate circle. People on ONTD act like only pure white people are ever on that show, even in the background and it annoys me.

Okay, but it would be nice to see POC that aren't just filler you know?

I would like that as well but I don't think it's /needed/.

That's I guess where my opinion differs from most peoples though.

donald glover is way too hot for lena dunham anyway.

wait, does this mean you disagree??? or are you just quoting clueless at me randomly?

I am not disagreeing exactly XD

see, donald glover is very attractive to me, both as an actor and a musician (and i guess therefore artist). lena dunham is arguably compelling, but attractiveness just... i feel like much of her compellingness stems from the fact of her veritable lack of attractiveness, if that makes any sense.

Lena looks average to me. She's not ugly or anything, but she's not stop traffic kind of beautiful either. I think she falls somewhere in between the two.

yeah, i think lena herself is just very very average. but factor in her general... demeanor, if that makes any sense, and the averageness drops a few notches to unattractive. it's the way she presents herself more than anything else.

Yeah her personality does leave a bit to be desired.

I thought the same thing. I feel really mean because I shouldn't be so shallow and judgemental about it, but he's just so much better looking than her it seemed unrealistic.

yeah, i'm honestly surprised they didn't address that more? like, it's not that disproportionately attractive people never go out with each other, but idk, absent some sort of explanation it's harder to maintain that suspension of disbelief...

Considering that Hannah lives in NYC, particularly in an area that is diverse, I think it would be more realistic if she had some non-white friends.
But after all that, I would rather they just keep the cast rather than introducing a black actor that is obviously a token character.

I do like girls, but also realize that it's problematic, so it's not my favorite show by any means.

When it gets down to it though Hannah only has in the beginning 2 friends. Marnie and Jessa. Shoshonna comes in later because she's related to Jessa. She met Marnie and Jessa in college a long time ago, not in the ethnically diverse neighborhood she lives in now.

Hannah is with Adam, the only "new" one of her people. She met him at a party a while ago.

Then Hannah moves in with Elijah who is Hannah's exboyfriend, she also met him at art college.

Yeah exactly. I mean maybe she doesn't get out a lot, but I would expect her to at least have non white acquaintances.

Yeaaah. Is it too much to ask to have some media representation beyond tokenization? Apparently.

Ssssh, you're just being TOO SENSITIVE, right.

Yeah exactly. We're everywhere but our media doesn't seem to reflect that.
